I think a G19 would be a little easier to carry if he's going to do some walking. SHTF though is suck anywhere in the BWI - DC corridor.

Where would he be keeping it? If in a truck, as a truck gun, I'd get a HiPoint 995TS since theft is a huge risk. If in the apartment, maybe a paratrooper SKS so he doesn't have to worry about a ton of mags. Looks unassuming, like a regular hunting rifle. If a landlord comes in to do repairs, it doesn't look too assaulty.

If you are away from home and a SHTF situation happens, most likely you won’t be carrying anything outside of a pistol. Even if you can store one in the vehicle for such event, once you take it out and carry it around, you will probably be a target once someone sees you.

I recommend blending in which means no long guns. If you have to travel far and need a reload or a replacement magazine, the most likely magazine will be a glock mag (9mm). A G19 is a likely gun that one can have available, on them, and be able to use some more common magazines.

Why not a G19 for carry but a CAA MCK in case you need to build it up?

Whatever you decide, make sure a vehicle safe is part of the plan.

Most employers frown on weapons in the workplace.

This. Having multiple firearms that take the same mags is a major plus. The Sub2k can fold down and fit in a backpack. The g17, well it's a handgun, so there's that to consider. Stock up on Glock mags and you're all set. Throw a bunch in the backpack.
Kriss Vector could work too :party29:

That's what I was going to suggest. Hi-Point carbine 9mm. Cheap, rugged, reliable and guaranteed for life. You don't have to worry about one of your "good" guns sitting in the trunk or under the panel where the spare tire in the SUV is kept. Take it out once a year for a function check.

If 50% of the combined population of DC/ Baltimore metro area is simultaneously trying to do the same thing , there won't be isolated woods to camp behind a camp tarp and dissappear. It will be elbow to elbow people everywhere.
I bet most people are afraid of the woods at night. Thats when and where I would do my traveling and find the thickest briars to hole up in daytime

If you're thinking handgun, then he is going to need a permit. It's not smart to keep it in the car. It should always be on him. Maybe you should be considering a get home bag as well. I keep a Henry Survival rifle in my GHB.

I already recommended the Hi Point Monkey Guns in post 23, but why not a 10mm?

Does anyone know the ballistics for 10mm out of a 17.5" barrel?

I got a ruger PCC for this reason. It's cheaper than many other options, takes Glock mags, and stores in the truck relatively easily/fits inside a backpack. Not my favorite thing to shoot but should get the job done if push comes to shtf. I hope to never use it!

    Two thoughts...

It would probably be a wise idea to make a few good, trusted friends along the way, where he could hole up for a night, or more if it seems to be a good idea to let the initial panic subside from whatever-it-was...

There are a number of MDS members in the Odenton/Ft. Meade area.

Suggest Rt144 in place of 70 for as long as he can, Mt Airy area I believe.
SD weapon is a personal choice, everyone is going to come up with different ones. I lean toward the Sub2k, a 1022 TD with some 25 rd mags might be good too. Most all choices involve compromise of some sort.
Initial event will probably have a couple days lag before it gets hairy. Best to jump ASAP.
