    The article states that the employee shot the robber as the robber was attempting to leave the store. Might be a case of no ability to claim self-defense at that point.

    and hit a customer apparently.

    shooting the bad guys after they've done their deed and are at the door is generally frowned upon. but i'm sure he wouldn't be the first violent criminal who turned around while leaving and fired off a couple of rounds to keep folks inside. or fired at the outside crowd to get them out of the way.
