You can find cheap pistol rugs at gun shows. I like these:

I too take 3-4 pistols to the range every time I go there. I too enclose each one in a pistol rug like DutchV has pointed to, and it works very well for me. I bought a couple of pistol rugs on one of my only visits to the Chantilly gun show but since then I have picked up several of them (and a couple of range bags as well for long rifles) at the Frederick gun show. Never had any problems at all.

The pistol rugs in a tool bag (like Dewalt) are a great option.
Condition 1 also has some reasonable options

Similar to the gun pouches you can get a set of multi-pack in squares (I got mine from amazon). Lightly padded and wide enough to fit a 6" Ruger GP100. I then stuffed them into whatever duffle bag I had lying around.

I agree about the tool bag! Not sure if Lowe's still has the sale going, but I am a big fan of Craftsman Tradestack. There were on deep discount last time I was there.

How much money to trust? For simple transport most will do. Don't leave them in the trunk overnight or gunz will surface rust.
Pelican has different levels including waterproof. I don't have one.

Water proof moves in both directions. If you store in a vapor proof container, you can also be locking moisture inside that container.
