    That a sabot?

Well at least it didn't have any powder and I suspect it would have been worse if the bullet was in there too. Have fun.

    And the Traditions Pioneer.
The Pioneer is 1-66" and I think the Hawken is 1-48"

    Got them shooting today.
I pre-measured 60grn loads of Pyrodex RS, Pre-Lubed CVA patches and Hornady .490 balls.
1 wet and 2 dry patches using both sides between shots.

Traditions was shooting right and the CVA was all over the place.
Traditions had a delay fire on it with #11 Rem caps.
I had 4 misfires and went Magnum #11 with the CVA before it shot. Then it shot consistantly. I think the channel to the nipple was blocked maybe when I ran an oil patch or something.
At 50 yards, Traditions was about 3-4" group.
Next time out, I'm going to stay at 25yards till I zero both of them and get them grouping right. I have to decide how I'm going to bump my charges up? 5 grains at a time? 2-3? Start back at 50grains? I'd like to figure out a target load first. My thoughts are if I can't get a target load to group, a hunting load would not group either? Correct?
I also think I should try some sabots in the CVA to compare to the PRBall.

Difficult to offer advice long distance, but try a thicker patch of pillow ticking in the CVA or a .495 ball.

Are you shooting from a bench?

Some ffg goex may be better for groups, but maybe not.

I like to use rubbing alcohol before I shoot. Pour some down with something blocking the nipple and slosh it around in the bore, dump it out and let it dry after wiping out the excess. Load after an hour or so. Cheap degreaser.

Keep at it, you have to learn what the rifle likes.

Forgot, sometimes a wonder wad between the powder and patched ball will help with accuracy. Two might even help more.

    Hope that helps.

Always pop 2 caps before you load any black powder gun to clean out the nipple channel of oil and foaling. Point the gun close to the ground and see if it moves some dirt or grass or some thing light, then you will know it is clear.

yea, I popped a cap before I left the house.
Then again at the range (per range rules).
I think the guy next to me at the range had the clue. I did not run a dry patch before loading like I did the Traditions. Plus I think I cleaned the Traditions better removing more of the oil and blowing it out cause of the stuck Sabot jacket.
I may have had some oil left there or down in the bottom.

The bore on the CVA is not as shiny as the Traditions. Gonna borrow a USB scope from a friend next week cause I'm curious.

Yes, I'm shooting from a bench.

I often shoot at lunch or in the morning before work, so I guess I can pull the nipple, run the alcohol then put the nipple back on when I'm at the range and dry patch before popping a cap.

I"m always game to try something else. I can pick up some maxiballs next time I see them and add that to the list of learning....

BTW, I keep hearing people say they run 3F Goex in their sidelocks and others 2F

You won't need alot of alcohol, maybe a thimble full or two or three slosh then dump, let dry and dry patch with a jag a few times.

As far as powder, hell I'll run fffg in my .50 New englander with good results. 70 grains and a 490 ball. Some folks like 2f better or simply use what they have.

By the way, good seeing you over on the muzzleloading forum. Good people and will help you alot. I certainly learned a lot there.

Well I did the alcohol but I need to see if I can clean out that flash channel.
I had the Traditions out today an first shot would not ignite even after 6 magnum primers
Had to pull the nipple and put some powder in to get it to go.
I suspect it had to do with the cleaning cause I took 6 more shots with no problems.
I was adjusting the sights at 25ft and finished that so I can go back to 50 next with that one

CVA is 1-66" twist. Measured the other night.
Well, I think I sorted out my cleaning and prepping.
I wanted to make sure my cleaning and pre-loading process was good and I think I accomplished that today. It was 32F at lunch at the range so I was pretty much by myself.

Took them both out at lunch and no misfires. Tapping Buttstock on the ground some helped. Only one delayed ignition and that was the time I forgot to tap.

I tried 3 plinker Sabots at the end with the CVA just for grins, Sabots were harder to insert even though I did 2 wet and 2 dry patches before loading them. I'm wondering if I should try thicker patches.

What kind of groups at 25yds should I be expecting if these were new with good clean bores once I work up a good load?

OK, after rust removing, I think I see some improvements.
I also got the Walmart Pillow Ticking and made my own Ballistol/Water mix for it.
I did try the previously used CVA patches just to see how the rust removal helped groups at 25yards so I have a before and after comparison and I like the improvement.
    First pic is CVA patches,
    2nd is Pillow ticking.
    Last 2 are the patches.

Now I can move to 50 yards and develop a Pyrodex load for this. Still looking for some Black Powder.
