    Hi all!

I just shot my first firearm few days ago at SEG range in Ashburn! (Surprise bday present from family) I shot a Glock and that was fun! Then upgraded to an AR15 they had at the range and I’m in LOVE! The AR15 was so much easier to shoot, fun and less recoil than I was expecting. I’m not sure what I was afraid of before!!! This is fun. The least exciting part of the whole experience was reloading the last 15th round into the Glock magazine. My thumbs started hurting after a few reloads and I couldn’t get the last round in. Reloading the AR15 was easy peazy.

Long story short, ever since I’ve shot that AR15 with fancy carbon fiber on top of the barrel and red dot scope. I want to get one! The one I shot was Christensen Arms CA556 Multi. The guy said that gun was over 2k at the range. I don’t want to spend that much on my first AR.

I was excited to get one of the PSA AR15 as my beginner gun but they can’t ship it to MD built. They can’t even ship a completed lower or upper to MD. Kind of bummed. It was on sale at $550 and now went back up to 599

I’ve been trying to read the MD state laws on “rifles” and it’s all confusing and not clear whatsoever. I’ll continue to read and try and find out how to get an AR15 registered to me.

All I could figure out was I need to have the rifle be shipped to FFL and fill out a 77r. I’m going to search this forum and see if there is a simple guide on how to get your first AR in this state. If any of you have bought a PSA rifle online and got to registered in MD I’d appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

I wished whoever writes these laws used simple English……

Waldorf is not super close to Woodbine but Brian at SCSG (they are an industry partner here and very popular with our members for good reason) is a good option for an AR off the rack or having one built up your way. Shoot him a PM and he will get you fixed up.

There are other IPs here that also have good reps but I know Brian and a couple of his guys and have always had great service from them.

Welcome ! Both to MDS , and to Shooting .

Simple answer to purchase your AR-15:

Step away from your computer . 98% of what you see , and everything on sale is " Free America Legal " . and you can't buy it .

Instead , visit several of your Maryland Gun Dealers . Everything on their shelves will be available for you to purchase, and take home same day .

    Welcome from Frederick County.
You will be filling out a Form 4473 for a NICS check. Not a 77R, which is a MSP background check for a handgun in Maryland, which comes with a 7 day wait and requires an HQL, unless the handgun is a C&R [older than 50 years in most cases].

When you get around to buying a Maryland legal AR variant, there is no registration.

Your FFL will help you complete the same day background check and that’s it.

OP, head to Gun Monkey gun shop in Laplata across from (the old) Casey’s, and they will assist and guide you through the process and should have a selection in stock.

IF , repeat IF , the OP is hypothetically thinking of purchasing either a stripped or complete Lower , in tandem with purchasing either individual components , or complete Upper Assembly , or some combination thereof , the Lower Reciever purchase would require the 77R Process ( 7 day wait , etc ) , but no HQL .

( Not necessarily saying I recommend this path for the OP , which I probably don't . )

    ****************************

Meanwhile , for the OP ( since no mention of experienced family member , or other experienced mentor at hand ) , this is a good stage of your Firearms Journey to take NRA Basic Rifle And Basic Pistol classes .

The laws are written by people that are not familiar with firearms, and therefore have no real knowledge of how to construct an anti-gun bill that makes sense.

    Welcome to MDS and shooting.

Welcome to MDS. Since I live in Montgomery County, I'm not familiar with Industry Partner's (IP's) located near Waldorf. But I echo the advice that others have given you and recommend that you visit a local gun shop to see what type of MD compliant AR15's they have. They will be in the best position to tell you what is legal in MD and guide you in your purchase. Just visit the IP page on this Forum and find one close to you.

Welcome from the same neck of the woods! Would be glad to meet up and help in any way I can.

From my understanding, your AR would need the heavy barrel (HBAR) to be MD compliant, unless it was a pistol or AR10. A local gun shop will be able to give you the full run down and options. Don't try to understand the Maryland laws, they don't make sense.

Yes, I'm replying to myself. I need to point out there are no anti-gun bills that make sense from a 2nd Amendment perspective.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

To address a few things. I will be taking the NRA basic courses and watch some highly recommended YouTube videos on how to handle the firearms properly especially the AR and its maintenance.

I think I’ll hold off on modding it until I give used to the stock feel then play with the fun mods and potentially cast my own carbon fiber pieces for it.

I will be visiting couple of local shops here and see what they have in stock that is comparable and in the same price point to the PSA one I had posted in OP. I read up on the specs and unfortunately it’s not designated as Heavy Barrel so can’t use it legally in MD :(

Hello from Glen Burnie. Welcome to MDS and firearms. I love to see people new to firearms excited about their new hobby. I had the same fun and excitement when I received a Ruger 10/22 from my mom and dad for Christmas one year when I was a young man. It’s been many years and have never lost the excitement about firearms. No turning back now for you, enjoy and have fun. Welcome!
