I"ve gotten conflicting information on the Designated Collector Status. Once you get it how exactly do you get by the 30 day requirement on the 77R. Just checking the DC Status block doesnt eliminate the check box for the 30 day question. I've been told if you check the box yes then MSP will automatically reject the application. And of course if you answer no, you are providing false information. ANybody dealt with this before.

When you make your purchase, your 77R will ask if you're a designated collector. When you check the box, the other boxes blank out for you to be able to check. Also, if you want, you can even attach your designated collector paperwork to your 77R online.

Once you check the designated collector box, the other is irrelevant. Leave it blank. The dealer should be able to explain it properly.

    Thanks that makes more sense

I found out the hard way by using a pre collector status 77r that if you dont check it, they make you wait 30 days between transfers. AKA I bought a gun, 20 days later I used an old 77r that I had sitting with out the box checked. They did not release it on day 7, I emailed the SP and the person on the other end of the email "fixed" it.

Yes. It's called "encourage independence on the easy stuff". There's already enough of you folks that feel a strong need to be Enablers to show how smart you are

Maybe my intended insult of the MSP and its website went awry?

Or maybe I'm just not as smart as you think I am. It's hard to tell sometimes around here if I'm being insulted.

I’m going on three weeks since I mailed my DC application. Haven’t received any response. Should I call? Just mail a new application?

I"ve gotten conflicting information on the Designated Collector Status.

A Designated Collector is a status granted and approved by the Maryland State Police upon submission of an application. It is granted to an individual who devotes time and attention to acquiring certain types of regulated firearms for the enhancement of the collector's personal collection, or possesses a Federal Firearms License (Collector of Curio and Relics). A Designated Collector is not authorized to act as a firearms dealer.

    Where to Mail Applications

    Maryland State Police
    Licensing Division
    1111 Reisterstown Road
    Pikesville, MD 21208
    Attn: Firearms Registration Unit

    Who Should Apply?

A person may not purchase more than one regulated firearm in a 30-day period, unless that person is a Designated Firearms Collector. Exemptions to the Designated Firearms Collector, and who may also purchase more than one regulated firearm in a 30-day period, are:
    1. The purchase is for a private collection or a collector series.
    2. The purchase is a bulk purchase from an estate sale.
    3. The purchase is for the purpose of taking advantage of a dealer's discounted price for a multiple purchase. No more than two firearms may be purchased at a time in this way.
    4. The purchase is for a security guard company.

    How To Apply

Simply fill out and submit the notarized Designated Collector Affidavit form (found below), and send it by mail to the Licensing Division address listed above.

    How Much Does It Cost?

There is no cost associated with becoming a Designated Collector.

    When Should I Renew?

Once issued, the Designated Collector status does not expire.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get a card with my collector status?

No. You will receive a letter explaining that you have been granted the status of a "Designated Collector". This status allows for multiple firearm purchases.

Am I licensed when I become a Designated Collector?

No. Designated Collector is a status granted to an individual by the Maryland State Police. This status allows the individual to purchase more than one firearm at a time. This status does not grant any additional privileges or expedite the processing time required for a regulated firearm purchase.

Are there any prerequisites to request for a Designated Collector status?

Yes. An applicant requesting a Designated Collector status must have a minimum of one (1) regulated firearm currently registered with the Maryland State Police.

My recent experiences with MSP indicate that DC status, once achieved, is automatically applied via their website.

Bob; my bad, no insult intended. Folks that cannot do a simple search on the most commonly asked questions have always bugged me. I was blowing off steam

    No problem.

I enjoyed writing my quoted comment.

Correct. Since MSPLD emails go out in batches, some email servers tag them as spam. Always dive deep into your spam folder when an email from MDSPLD appears to be late.
