I normally cut and split my own wood (2 cords or so a year). For larger logs I use a Fiskars Splitting Axe (always got my eyes on a hydraulic splitter) but for now I enjoy doing it all by hand.

For smaller logs or making some good starters the WoodWiz is a great tool. I know some may laugh - I did too when I first saw it. But after a few minutes I was sold (I've had mine for 14 years). You have way more control and if you have a solid base most logs split with a few whacks.

I second the use of a hydraulic log splitter, especially one that can be rotated to split vertically. I used to heat with red oak, and wet rounds from the lower part of the trunk were beastly heavy.

When I didn't have the machine, I used a splitting axe with a fiberglass handle, and a maul with wedges. Be sure to wear safety glasses. I had pieces of steel shear off wedges and hit me in the arm. I kept them pretty well dressed with a grinding wheel. Sometimes it just happens.
