question, why did someone here mention they'd rather get the utah ccw rather than the virginia ccw?... what's the difference?

Utah has more reciprocal agreements with states than Virginia does. Frankly, my view is get every single non-resident permit you can afford. If you are in said state, like Virginia, it is better to have a Virginia non-resident than it is a Utah non-resident with reciprocity. Easier to deal with uninformed LEOs.

Anyone know if a VA non-Res CCW and a MD Firearms Safety Training Course Certificate(online) will work as proof of training for a Florida non-Res CCW?

Florida requirements are covered in many other threads. The short answer is no, but the complete answer is "search is your friend." :D

Is the permit improved or is it still laminated paper with your photographed placed on it? Also much too big for a wallet?

lol I could have made something that looked better with a inkjet and home laminater. Its still big and ugly but I carry a bifold so it fits if I carried a trifold I would be screwed.

    Here's my VA CCW timing:

3-6-10: Mailed application to Richmond (USPS priority + deliv conf.)
3-10-10: Receipt for payment processed (bank money order)
3-30-10: "Issue Date" on the laminated card.
    4-1-10: CCW approval letter dated
4-7-10: CCW card mailed from Richmond
4-9-10: CCW card received in MD
