I have seen lots of guys post pictures on the forum and the photos uploaded are huge. Please remember that images take up a lot of room on the server and I simply would like to post how I make my photos smaller. I use Microsoft Paint, which is a standard program on most every computer:

    1) Open Paint
    2) Select EDIT from tool bar
    3) select PASTE FROM
    4) Select your image file
    5) Select IMAGE from tool bar
    6) Select RESIZE / SKEW
    7) Change HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL both to 50%
7a) *You may have to do this twice if you have an extremely large image.
    8) Select FILE from the tool bar
    9) Select SAVE AS

Then upload your photo to your post / reply.

The readers will appreciate it and so will the pocket of the owner of this fine internet resource.

When you save, use "save as."
    Select the same name.
The program you are using should tell you that name already exists.
Put a small "-s" on the old name, for small, and push save.
That way you will have the large photo for editing, and a small one for posting.

Are you speaking of photos uploaded to the server hard drive, or referenced embedded photos that are hosted elsewhere? Because one would be a storage and possible bandwidth issue, while the other just a possible bandwidth issue. Also, what in pixels or bytes size do you consider "huge"?

Every member is limited to 10MB of storage on the site, so if they use it up, it's on them. If it's hosted elsewhere, I don't really see the problem.

Another option from Paint is a very good piece of software called Irfanview. It is free and very easy to learn. There are many plugins available and it can be used for most media types.

To resize a photo in irfanview
    Open image
select <Image> from the tool bar
    select <Resize/Resample> from the sub-menu

Here you have an option of setting a specific size (by pixel, centimeters or inches manually or commonly used sizes by selecting the appropriate option) or changing by a percentage of the original.

    select <File> from toolbar
choose save as to change the name, save as (web) to optimize for web pages or just save to over write the original

Some other things you can do with the program are create thumbnail versions, create slideshows, convert things from one format to another, and of course editing photos.

Linux users can go for GIMP. ;)

I am sure the OP is talking about his resources to view the pictures. Not everyone is on Highspeed or has large monitors to view some of the high res pictures.

I have no issues viewing any pictures. I am talking about pictures that get uploaded to the MDS server and they take up 2.5 screens when they load up in the thread. It's not a computer smarts thread, it's how to make a picture smaller so people can see it on the same screen.

I know this is a very old thread, but I figure it's better to have the info concise in one thread to make searching a little easier.

Are there any tags to scale hot-linked (embedded from another site) images without having to write a new file where ever the file is hosted?

FIFY - don't worry, you won't have to do it twice, we all know that once it's at 3% it will always be at 3%

Not sure I understand your question, but if you right click on a photo on a website and then click 'properties', the url should show. Copy the url and then come back to MDS and hit reply.

Click on the icon that looks like a yellow box with a mountain on it - insert image - (under the counter-clockwise arrow). This will bring up a box where you can paste the url.

Presto, the picture will show in your post.

If that's not what you asked, I'm an assbag.

Is something like this too big?
    Removed my Molonlabe

Seriously that is why I try to use links wherever possible.

A good program for resizing is Hypersnap.

Bold part - not at all.

I know how to hot-link here, but the photo in question is large. Some sites allow it to be scaled on-the-fly so it doesn't cause havoc with smaller screen sizes (or they auto-scale large images predetermined by the site owner and images smaller than the limit at the actual size). Regular HTML can do it, but for forums it typically has to be a feature since html in a post isn't interpreted by a browser; it's just text in the post.

For example, if an image is 1024x768, in html one could put <img src="http://url.for.image.jpg" width="629" height="419"> for it to display as 629x419 regardless of the the actual image size.

There are two choices, hot-linking (like post #16 above) or upload them directly. It seems hot-linking from here is the norm with (if I read correctly) a 10 MB quota per user.

Am I missing a third option?

UPDATE: Ok, I took the to to read the other thread. I either hot-link from FB (not sure if it violates their ToS) and smugmug (a site I pay to use and have explicit permission to hot-link to my own files). I may have hot-linked a few images from other sites, but that practice will cease.
