    1. Reminder: VCDL picnic coming up THIS Sunday!

VCDL Picnic on Sunday, August 28th! RSVP BEFORE FRIDAY, 8/26

The weather looks like it will be perfect for the first VCDL picnic in several years! Bring the family and enjoy some fellowship at the Osborne Park and Boat Landing in Henrico County.

We've reserved the pavilion and will be bringing burgers and dogs. Bring a dish to share, your yard games and your fishing rods. A fishing license is required for those 16 years of age and older.

The park features a large open grass area, restrooms, handicap access and a fishing pier. There are swings for the kids within view of the pavilion. There are also hiking trails. A member may bring their boat and offer short boat rides, so if you have a life jacket you can bring it (especially children sizes).

The pavilion size is limited to 80 people, and since we're supplying the main course and the drinks, we appreciate an RSVP before Friday, so we know how much food and drinks to bring.

RSVP by sending an email to Pat.Webb@VCDL.org with the subject line saying [# attending] for Osborne Picnic. Substitute the number in your party for [# attending].

    Details:

    Date: Sunday, 8/28/2022

    Time: 11:00 am

Location: Osborne Park and Boat Landing

    9530 Osborne Tpk

    Henrico, VA 23231

    2. Tilting at windmills: The debate on whether an AR-15 is a military or non-military firearm is moot

The anti-gunner’s panties are in a tight wad over AR-15s because they don’t like black guns, especially if those guns have various cosmetic features, such as a bayonet lug <eye roll>. You know - the scourge of drive-by bayonetings going on in Chicago?

So, the anti’s latest tactic is to scream (that’s pretty much their main mode of communication) that an AR-15 is a weapon of war and should not be owned by anyone but the military, government agencies, and the police.

So, if citizens don’t need so called “weapons of war”, why exactly would the police and government bureaucrats need them?

<Crickets chirping quietly in the background>

Armies have not used AR-15s in war, so it’s hard to call one a weapon of war. The M-16/M-4 is superior for that purpose with its semi-automatic, burst, and fully-automatic selector switch.

That said, could one fight a war with an AR-15?

Sure. AR-15s have a lot in common with their M-16/M-4 cousin. AR-15s use the same mid-power cartridge and the same 20 or 30-round magazine as the M-16/M-4. And the really scary issue for the antis is the AR-15 LOOKS LIKE an M-16!

But all of this is totally moot.

The Second Amendment and Article 1, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution both protect the right of the People to own and carry bearable weapons of war!

Even the Supreme Court back in 1939 in US v Miller made it clear that any weapon of use to a militia (think “weapon of war”) is protected by the Second Amendment.

And American history and tradition backs up that right. From the beginning, American’s have owned and carried weapons in use by the military: from muskets, to revolvers, to pistols, to pump and semi-automatic shotguns, to lever-action, bolt-action, and semi-automatic rifles, and, to a lesser degree, both fully-automatic rifles and pistols.

So, to my anti-gun friends: I am tired of arguing with you about whether an AR-15 is a sporting gun or a “weapon of war.” Call it what you want, but it is protected by the Second Amendment either way. <Microphone drop>

In this article a retired Major General says AR-15s are “weapons of war.” And, if so, Major General, your point is?

    3. Update on using drywall anchors as .22 snap caps

I ordered some of the red drywall anchors from Menards. They don’t work as a .22 snap cap. They are too thick to chamber. So, don’t waste your time with ordering those.

Bruce Jackson found some that work at Home Depot. It is a 150 pack Everbilt #4 - #6 x 7/8-inch plastic rib anchors in yellow. I think the part number is 1004 810 314.

    4. Help needed: VCDL table Fishersville gun show on Sept 10-11

Volunteers needed for the Fishersville gun show on Sept 10 and 11!

Volunteers are needed for both days all shifts:

    Sat: 9am – 1pm and 1pm – 5pm

    Sun: 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 5pm

To volunteer, email Jim Kiser, VCDL’s Shenandoah Valley coordinator at: gunshows.fishersville@vcdl.org

    5. Newport News, which has local gun control for non-CHP holders, is electing council members and Mayor

The seats for Newport News Mayor McKinley Price, Councilwoman Sharon Scott, Councilman David Jenkins, and Vice-Mayor Saundra Cherry are all up for reelection on November 8.

Newport News has local gun-control, with an exemption for CHP holders. It is important that those seats are filled with people who respect the right to keep and bear arms and who will hopefully repeal the City’s ban on open carry in government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at permitted or should have been permitted events.

Who voted for that gun-control ordinance back in July of 2020? Mayor Price suggested the ordinance, but he’s not running again. Only Councilwoman Dr. Patricia Woodbury voted against the ordinance. So, none of the incumbents who are running for reelection to council or election to mayor support open carry.

Watch for the results of the VCDL Candidate Survey for Newport News around October. Also watch for any VCDL-PAC endorsements in those races.

    6. Virginia Congressman Don Beyer has introduced a bill to create a 1,000% tax on ARs

Congressman Don Beyer, who embarrassingly represents Virginia, only wants rich people to have access to AR-15s and AK-47s. If you are underprivileged or don’t own a big car dealership, like elitist Beyer does, then tough beans.

Beyer wants to put a 1,000% tax on “assault weapons.” So, an AR-15 that would normally cost, say, $800, would now cost $8,800! A pittance to Mr. Beyer and his friends, but a whole lot of money to most people.

Mr. Beyer is up for reelection on November 8.

    Here’s a video talking about Beyer’s HB8015:

    7. Help needed: VCDL table at Freedom Rally in Boones Mill on September 24

This year's FREEDOM RALLY will be on September 24, from 10am to 3pm. (Philip Van Cleave is an invited speaker at this event.)

ADDRESS: 150 Bernard Rd.; Boones Mill, VA

VCDL will be setting up our table and tent at 8:45am.

VCDL MEMBER helpers needed for this event! Please RSVP to: al@vcdl.org

    8. Article on Richmond’s virtue-signaling gun buy-up

Richmond decided to spend $67,500 of taxpayer’s COVID-19 relief funds to virtue-signal on guns. The guns turned in aren’t “from the street,” but from non-criminal’s homes. Net effect on crime in Richmond: zero.

Big Daddy Unlimited asserts Rare Breed Forced Reset Trigger is a machine gun in court docs.

    10. [IL] Attempted carjacker shoots and misses, but CHP holder doesn’t miss

Carjacker fires wildly at a car in Chicago. Unfortunately for him there was a CHP holder in that car who returned fire.

Final score: CHP holder unharmed; bad guy in the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his chest.

    Guns saving lives!

    11. [WI] Who needs a gun at home?

    https://www.nbc12.com/2022/08/18/mom-fatally-shot-home-intruder-defend-kids-she-says/?fbclid=IwAR08V4FyB79Se1Ol3TsMoCtZlG51KOPPjIba0MwZIK6OdcEqcknNzTdwCR0

    12. Shootings and stabbings in weapon-free England

“The [9-year-old] girl's death [and wounding of another man and woman in the home] came after a spate of killings involving guns and knives on Merseyside. On the same night, a woman was found with a fatal stab wound in her chest in a pub car park in Kirkby, while on Sunday, 28-year-old council worker Ashley Dale died after being shot in the Old Swan area of Liverpool.”

Banning guns and sharp knives in England hasn’t stopped the murders and violent attacks. Most of us on this side of the pond knew it wouldn’t. England has historically had a low murder rate, but a higher violent crime rate, even when carrying handguns was not prohibited. But the murder rate seems to be going up and gun bans don’t help that statistic.

An important point to keep in mind: The gun controllers like comparing the U.S. to England as far as crime. England has a population of 55 million. The U.S. has a population of 335 million.

Comparing a country with the size and diversity of the U.S. to any single Western European country makes no sense.

A more accurate comparison would be of Western, Northern, and Southern Europe COMBINED to the U.S.

    13. Another pro-2A case headed to Supreme Court!

This case could help fix the new unconstitutional restrictions that California and New York are trying to put on CHP applicants.

    https://youtu.be/oYGSQhZIk6E

    14. Richmond’s police chief and mayor seem to be caught in a lie about Dogwood Dell being the target of a terrorist attack back on July 4

Looks like the two illegal aliens, who were arrested for allegedly plotting a massacre at Richmond’s Dogwood Dell park on July 4th, might not have been doing so. At least there is no proof, the police keep changing their story, and no terrorist charges have been levied. One has to wonder if it could have just been an intentional distraction from other issues going on in the City…

One reporter has been locked onto the whole issue and won’t let go. He wants answers. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what a reporter is supposed to do and is damned rare these days.

Here’s the latest article by Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Bob Lewis:

    15. No joke: desperate New York justifies gun control based on historical banning of guns from native Americans and Catholics!

You simply cannot make this stuff up!

New York admits that early gun-control in the America was based on racism and elitism. I never thought I’d see the day that gun-controllers would actually admit such a thing, much less to publicly use racism and elitism to justify gun-control!

New York gun-controllers do not want regular people like you and me to be carrying guns. No, no, no. That’s reserved for people with the proper net worth, the proper skin color, the proper political philosophy, and the proper political connections.

The problem for New York is that the U.S. Supreme Court in “Bruen” has said that only gun-control with widespread history and tradition going back to the early days of the Country can be considered constitutional.

In their desperation to maintain the ability to discriminate based on racism and elitism, New York wrote this to preserve their new “good moral character” CHP requirement in their legal brief:

“From the early days of English settlement in America, the colonies sought to prevent Native American tribes from acquiring firearms, passing laws forbidding the sale and trading of arms to Indigenous people.”

    And:

“[E]ven after the English Bill of Rights established a right of the people to arm themselves, the right was only given to Protestants, based on a continued belief that Catholics were likely to engage in conduct that would harm themselves or others and upset the peace.”

Well, the truth will set us free, won’t it, New York?
