Was the 516 banned by name? My friend's was purchased after 2013.

SIG 550/551 is what is enumerated in statute.

on MDSP website Sig Sauer 516 says : Copy of the Colt AR15 ( https://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/CriminalInvestigationBureau/LicensingDivision/Firearms/FirearmSearch.aspx?Paged=TRUE&p_GroupCol1=Nodak&PageFirstRow=101&&View={5E568F20-A495-4E49-A0E0-C53F530B98F7} ). :lol2::lol2: NO!

Which is clearly wrong, 516 is short stroke piston. 550 is long stroke piston.

So, 516 should not be banned.

Anyone have one of the colt piston rifles? I sold one of those 6940Ps a while back when I was still at the gun counter. The gun was pretty intriguing, but I never followed up with much research after taking it apart and fondling it in the back room.

So the replacement for my HK 416 D is the S&W M&P 15T II. I had heard it was going to be the Sport model so this could have been a bit worse but this M&P is light years from my HK. At least I got to keep my ACOG for use on the S&W.

My God does the S&W get dirty. This thing is filthy after 50 rounds…..Piston v. DI. After my first 200 rounds accuracy has been very good and no failures. I know this is only 200 rounds but it’s all I have shot so far.

According to a sales guy working at TMGN, DI is a thing of the past and is being phased out. The industry is headed piston. This was a few months ago.

I didn't realize piston was growing so fast. Interesting info.

Tip of the day, don’t listen to a sales guy lol

Don't listen to the sales guy but there are reports from the military that reveal after multiple mag dumps the DI's jammed up in some pretty critical situations.
Not everyone carries around a tube of lube wherever they go. Ok, maybe some porn stars.

LWRC used to have a video where they ran through, I believe, 15 30 round mags non-stop full auto. No lube piston; shit was red hot but did not melt. I believe there are other video's out there of DI's melting and on fire way before that point.

To each their own but I'll worry about spare parts later and focus on reliability when it's needed.

And again; AK and SKS, DI or piston, what did they go with?

You do you and I'll do me; it's all good, interesting thread. :D

While entertaining, those videos don't prove much except that you can destroy a rifle pretty quickly...DI or piston. Both will be damaged and useless.

One common failure point for a DI under those circumstances is the gas tube. From what I understand that's intentional to prevent damage to other components. Not sure if pistons have a fail safe.

That LWRC in that test will have damage even though it still ran. The question is how severe. Will you be able to get parts easily for it? I can drive up the road to my local shop to find parts for my DI. Pistons also need lube. Not sure why you would insinuate that the LWRC doesn't need it. They still have internal moving parts that aren't magical.

The fact is that no evidence exists that Piston is more reliable than DI...especially in the AR platform.

We each have our opinions but just don't mix up facts with entertaining YouTube videos. They aren't the same thing.

I have an Osprey 416 piston built AR, and an Adams Arms piston AR. I’ve tried building just about everything AR wise just to have fun and see what it’s like. I do love the Osprey 416, but one thing I’ve learned from all the builds I’ve done, is I keep going back to the way things were originally designed. I’ve tried AR pistols, 7.62x39 builds, piston, etc, but my most fun and reliable AR I grab every time is my M16A1 build. Love that thing!

If I were going to go with a non-standard type of AR, I would rather go with a AR-180 or something similar that allows me to get rid of the buffer tube and gives me more options for a stock. I don't see much of an upside to the piston, other than it's easier to clean. Is it more reliable? I don't know. My DI AR's seem to be reliable and have good accuracy.

LWRC BCG's are nitrosomething coated perhaps that's the magical lube?

    IDK

I do know I can get with PWS or LWRC and get whatever parts I want to stock up now for future failure; they are still in business.:D

Don't get me wrong as I have DI rifles and pistols and enjoy them just as well as my pistons; but prefer pistons.

    Ho Le Chit.

Hard pass. Not standard caliber. I guess I'm not as evolved as I thought!

Late to this thread. I own both platforms and shoot them alot. My piston guns are lwrc and di guns are colt, daniel defense, and knights armorment. They all work fine. Never had a problem so the only difference to me is depending on the number of rounds I'm shooting in a class and don't want to clean then go to the piston gun. They really don't get dirty. That being said if you keep the di well lubed than they will work no matter how much grim the lube pushing out. My end result is I like both platforms. Wouldn't want to sell either one. GET THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU HAVE AN Orgasm!
