You think this ammo shortages is just a ploy to make more money? Gun owners ammo consumption is not much. Can you imagine if war break out tomorrow. We will spiting at the enemies :D

No it’s not a ploy. US military, consumes something on the order of 2 billion rounds of ammo per year. The US civilian market is roughly 8 billion rounds. Us military demand could quadruple and at worst, there’d be civilian to military shift in production. Yeah, yeah same deal some of it is rimfire, .45LC, etc. but centerfire Ammo lines can pretty quick be converted to 5.56 and 7.62 production.

On top of that the military (the US military anyway) like a good prepper sits on tons and tons of reserve ammunition supplies. Now they might run out of JDAMs and cruise missiles fast, but they’ve got on the order of tens of thousands of rounds per individual soldier (their annual turn over is on the order of 1400 rounds per deriving member of the Army Per year. Doesn’t matter if they are an intelligence clerk, a nurse, or a grunt. Actual war fighters I’d imagine that works out to more like 3k rounds a year.

And civilian production could again shift fairly rapidly (though it might largely be producing M193 and not M855A1 and M80 and not M80A1)

Ammo manufacturers don’t typically sit on large reserves. They do just in time manufacturing. Why incur the cost of having a months factory production sitting around? That’s margins you are cutting in to.

Same reason our hospitals didn’t have a bunch of PPE sitting around. That costs money. Just buy what you need every week.

We’ve just in timed ourselves up a creek.

I was on gunbot and looked up .22 long rifle. Tons of entries popped up. However, when I then went to the actual websites, almost all of them were out of stock. I was seeing prices anywhere 8-24 cents per round. For 24 cents per round, I'd be willing to sell my entire stash of .22.

After President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are inaugurated, what do you think will happen to supply? I am going to start loading up on sharp sticks, because they will probably be going for $100 apiece by then.

I'm assuming Remington's bankruptcy also includes their ammo production...and that isn't going to help our situation:sad20:

If it comes to liquidation I would think another company would step up and buy Remington's ammunition operations...there's value in the equipment, capacity and physical facilities that can be added to another company's capabilities. Doing so could add to their ability to compete for government contracts as well as civilian. It would depend on the physical condition of existing equipment, though. If in need of rehab the investment might be deemed too high for the expected rate of return.

I looked at armslist yesterday and there is alot of 22 LR for sale. The majority of the prices were 120.00 for 2000 rounds. A little high but it is plentiful.

Interestingly some manufacturers who were doing JIT have come to find out that when the supply lines are slowed or broken they sit on a fat stack of orders but not raw materials to build their product. In the ammo manufacturing realm you have to have all of the components, primer, powder, casing and bullet in enough quantities to perform a run. If one of the components is missing the whole line shuts down. The same holds true for manufacturing widgets or anything else.

Some companies are trying to figure out how much inventory they need to have on hand to meet a one, two or three month lack of availability of components problem.

I'm out of sympathy for people whining about shortages of 22 ammo.

In mid-March I was able to order cases of 22LR for under 5 cents per round. All the info about pending shortages had been prominently discussed here well in advance.
Failure to pay attention will require higher payment down the road. Learn from the experiences of those who preceeded you, or learn from your own bitter expereince.

Since 2013 my .22 policy has been shoot a box, buy 2. Now I have 30K+ on the shelf. Same policy for 9mm since in flush times it isn't worth reloading, 7K to 8K on the shelf. I'm not even going to guess at .223 or the bunch of other calibers.....:gun1::innocent0
