A loaded revolver sure beats my current setup in Montgomery County. An unloaded 380 in a zippered case in my jacket pocket is the best I can do.

You are entirely correct. But i am not going to risk a felony conviction, loss of gun rights forever and spending years in court fighting on the chance that a Montgomery County judge would see it that way. I do not have any confidence in the "right" outcome. I've seen too many B westerns. I'm just doing me.

I do me. As I see it, the only way anyone knows anything is if I need it. If I need it, I need it to be loaded.

Had a minty '70's vintage Charter .44 Bulldog, but it had these insanely off-center primer strikes. Even though it never misfired, I just couldn't abide that and let her go. If it was "right", I think I'd still have it and I would absolutely load it with CCI snake shot in a OWB holster for walking around the very "Copperheady" woods around here.

The caliber doesn't bother me. A 5-shot revolver however has no place for me other than as the proverbial "New York reload" and even then I have better options.

You're gonna see that age plays a factor on the response you're going to get OP. Revolvers were the king until the late 80's and the older guys just love 'em.

As for carrying there are better options but I believe I'd take a 5 shot 44spl over a glock 43(6+1 in 9mm)\

Maybe browse at 6 shot 357mag revolvers if youre dead set on a wheel gun

Also trusting my life to anything Taurus brand would make me nervous

When I carry my 5 shot Taurus 85CH I usually have my Taurus 856UL in a coat or pants pocket. I'm considering breaking my S&W 442 out for the first time in 5 to 10 years to carry in conjunction with said 856 (same idea but if I'm carrying two guns, may as well make both lightweight).

One of my carry guns is a new model Colt King Cobra. In .38 I also have the 6 round 856UL and may get a Taurus Defender. I don't carry my 3" S&W 65LS, I want to keep it clean (it was my first .357mag, and is the handgun I've owned the longest) plus with the escalating value of those guns it would be a bit of a stretch to replace it if something happened to it.

    No, in a revolver I'd want either a smaller/lighter 5 shot or a 6 shot. Either way I'd probably go for a .38 Special or a .357

Both S&W and Ruger have 7 shot .357 magnum options with about the same size and weight as a 5 round .44.

    S&W 686+ or GP100.

In a typical semi auto, +2 rounds isn't all that significant (IE 12 to 14, or 10 to 12), but going from 5 to 7 is a bit different... at least it seems so to me.

A lot of people here trusting their first round self defense shooting accuracy under stress.
Those who carry revolvers for their serious EDC ( I'm not talking about throwing a hammerless in your coat pocket at night taking the dog for a quick walk around the block), but daily, 9-5 out in public travels, need to watch some police/self defense shooting videos, put yourself in their position, and ask yourself if a revolver would have been a better choice.

A self defense shooting is an "open shooting match", so why would you carry limited class?

And don't tout the " Most self defense shootings are only 2 rounds between 7 and 10 yards", or "They don't jam" crap.

I always wanted a Charter Arms Son of Sam special.
Same here. I had the pleasure of sitting next to David Ecker on a flight from Manchester, NH to BWI a few years ago. We spent about an hour talking about revolvers and CA's position in the marketplace. I asked him what he did for CA and he said, "I own the company..." LOL I just thought he was some marketing guy on a business trip.

I have a Colt Detective Special from 1989 that I shoot well but, I'd rather not risk having it confiscated by LE if I ever had to use it, God forbid. I paid $700 for it and it's worth northward of $1000 these days. OTOH, I'd have no problem handing-over a $400 CA Bulldog that I just used to ventilate an assailant.

While I do own one .44sp revolver it’s a 5 shot with a 6” barrel and not very practical to carry. If I were going to choose the caliber I’d carry a .44mag variant loaded with special, many more options/sizes on the market.

I don't often go anyplace scarier than a well-lit Walmart.

I have considered the snubbie 44 Magnum route as well. Not because I want to shoot 44 Magnum but because it can handle a multiple lifetimes of shooting hot 44 Special / mild 44 Magnum loads. Mentally a 200+ grain bullet at 1000 FPS just seems right.

The Pierce articles I mentioned upthread list the Charter Arms Bulldog as being capable of handling Tier 2 loads but that the guns will wear rapidly. They would also be unpleasant to shoot in such a light gun. The hot Buffalo Bore loads are specifically listed as being not suitable for the Charter Arms revolver.

Charter Arms has models that chamber 40 S&W and 357 magnum if that indicates anything about the strength of their design. They also have a 45ACP version that looks like it is a scaled up frame.

Those Pierce articles are available if you poke around on the internet. PM me if you can't find them.

Ruger GP100 was available as a 44 Special snubbie. I think they still offer it in in a longer barrel and in a 10mm snubbie. S&W Model 69 is a 5 shot 44 Magnum based on the L Frame with a 2.75" barrel.

If you're not reloading them shooting a lot of 44 Special is going to be an expensive hobby.

I don't know how any of this applies to the Taurus revolver in question.

First, I'd never willingly put myself in the same position as a trained LEO. I'm not a cop. I'm just some overaged schmuck trying to increase the odds of my survival, without having to CC a loaded pistol pointed at my testicles that looks like it came out of a box of Crackerjack. Makes me a little uncomfortable. OTOH, all bets are off when it comes to open carry. I'd strap-on my Walther PDP and be done with it.
