Took the old bolt action JC Higgins 16 gauge out this morning and shot some slugs out of it.
I've got this box with a couple of three inch thick phone books and an old hard cover novel in it wrapped with duct tape that I like to use as a "target". You can see what the 5 slugs did to the box and...

That's good. I've also got a JC Higgins bolt action 16 gauge. I think that's a pretty cool gun too. Don't see that many bolt action 16 gauges around too much any more.
I have a 12 gauge that looks very similar. Next to the "J. Stevens Arms Company" there is an engraved dog that's pointing.
I just had it out and was shooting it yesterday...a lot of fun.
I fired 3" mags out of my old Stevens 5100 sxs (marked 2 3/4") before I knew what I was doing without being blown up. Now, since I've wised up, I don't use 3" mags anymore with the old Stevens.
I haven't seen any at Wal-Mart. I have found 16 gauge small game loads at Big 5. 16 gauge buck shot is hard to find. Like Big, I got some #1 buck from Sportsman Guide a while back, but it's been on back order recently.
