Tell me about that gun "the varmiter " looks nice.
My farmers haven't cut some of there hay and barley yet? It's so tall elephants could hide in it. lots of rain in June, is messing up some prime hog shooting time now.
They just cut the wheat and are starting to cut the hay where I hunt, so you can see em again without having to be up in a tree... lol

That is a basic 223AR with a 20" wylde bull barrel. It is very accurate, though a bit front-heavy. I shoot either 55gr Vmax or today I was using some 40gr Nosler BT loads at about 3300fps. I like the 40gr when I am in a more suburban setting, as there is very little chance of any ricochet. The booliit disintegrates when it hits anything, even grass.. lol

Both are very effective on whistle pigs.

Shooting ground hogs is one of my favorite things to do in life. I shoot a AR chambered in 223, 16" barrel with a x4 scope. My longest kill shot has been right around 280ish yards.

.22 wmr with a 40 grain bullet is going to have much higher retained energy than .17hmr past about 150yds IIRC and roughly the same bullet drop at 200yds, I think. Definitely higher muzzle energy. 30gr .22 wmr on the other hand is a pretty poor performer compared to .17hmr.

I've been looking at a CVA hunter in .243. THAT should be a pretty awesome performer out well past 200 yards without much drop. Trying to figure out how to "get in to centerfires" at some point (just started muzzleloading). That seems like a pretty cheap way and look at investing some nice change on something like a Weatherby .308 down the road when I don't mind dropping $750 on a rifle and scope combo. Of course I also really want a .22 wmr savage 93 for target shooting and a mossberg 500 for goose/duck hunting. So anything might be awhile. .243 to me seems like it could be a fine 200yd or less deer round and just fine on varmits well up to 300yds or more.

Couple more down the hole today. One at about 65yds offhand and the other off the bipod at 150. 223, 40gr Nosler BT. Dropped on the spot.

    The baby at 65yds...

Beans are sprouting... like crack for hogs... LOL

.17 Hmr from my 93r. Range was about 100-120yds.
2nd one was two days earlier from about the same distance. I dropped 5 in a week. One was in the hole and the others ran into them after being hit.

I do enjoy helping the farmer that is working the in law's land. Its only 30 acres but those little buggers are cleaning up his beans and corn.

I used to hunt them for a farmer in Union Bridge years ago. Used a Remington 220 Swift with VMax rounds, anything within 150 yards would literally explode............. was a Nasty round.

I found this ground hog skull and both lower jaw bones. Cleaned it up, the teeth loosened up and slipped out. I couldn't believe how long the teeth are.

Thanks Semper. I got it back in '05. Guess when .17 HMR started taking off. Thinking of getting a .17WSM.

This guy has been marauding my weeping Mulberry tree. This was the first shot I've taken with my bow since last years shoulder surgery! I'm happy.:D

So I shoot another hog in the yard yesterday and figure nice younger one I'm going to eat it. I skin it and gut it then looked for the glands under the arms and in the small of the back? What to hell do they look like as I didn't see anything. I did remove the anal glands but the others, I'm at a loss. Help, Chris
