OK guys, let the debate (brand wars) begin.

Can I get a 1911 (full size) for $500 and which one?

Firstly, I've never owned a 1911 (I'm a Sig fan), and not sure if I should go new or used.

Secondly if I'm getting a 1911, it's GOING to be .45 ACP, so don't even recommend anything else.

No, I'm not buying a $3000 Wilson Combat either..

I could be talked into a higher budget (max $800), but I have to justify it for the right reasons..., quality, reliability, parts, repair costs etc etc.

I'd also like Stainless, as I have a dozen evil black firearms already.

So I'll throw a few out there and lets hear your suggestions:

Colt (obviously), Springfield Armory, Rock Island Armory.

    GO....

    I'll sell you my 1911 for $500 :D

GI generally means the original small sights, standard tang grip safety, unaccurized fit and usually parked.

The modern rendition of the 1911 has high visibility sights, beavertail grip safety, generally better fit and finish goes from plain to excellent. All these improvements do make the pistol more shootable and groups are smaller. That is why the features are so prevelant.

Chad expounded on the effectiveness of the grip safeties. One can get near beavertsil effectiveness by going to a WWI tang grip safety but you better bob the hammer if using high thumb hold.

As far as the variations of the R1, usually a chart or a shop with a couple models helps. To sell the guns they need to make what folks want. High or low dollar, the 1911 is a collector's and 'accumulator's' gun.

I have an Argentine 1911, the quality is excellent!!! I think its better than RIA to be honest. They mark their 1911 police and military. Mine is marked with Juan Peron' Secret Police....similar to the Gestapo.

    great shooter!

I've got the R1 Enhanced and I really like it, however - at $900+ it is a bit beyond Troopers price range. Hell, even the base model R1 is about $650.

    Worth it in my opinion.

I'll probably consider lifting the budget a little higher.

I just had $500 to play with for now (without the girlfriend complaining LOL), so I'm considering selling or trading an AR upper.

That should put me in the $1000 mark, plus plenty of ammo :D

I'm considering selling/trading this if anyone has a quality 1911.

May put an Ad in the classifieds later when I have time, but I'm at work

May keep the lower, but split the upper and stock if anyone's interested.

There's ~$2000 in this 18" SPR build (circa ~150rnds through it), plus I have a sweet BlackHawk case that fits it.

    Build List:

    Lower:
Rock River Arms - Stripped Lower
Rock River Arms - 2-Stage trigger kit
Rock River Arms - Winter Trigger Guard
    A2 Buffer Tube Assembly
    Magpul BAD (Battery Assist Device)
    Suregrip Ergo Deluxe Tactical Grip
Engraved Ejection Port Cover - Molon Labe
    MagPul PRS Stock

    Upper:
Rock River Arms - A4 Upper Receiver Assembly
Rock River Arms - Bolt Carrier Group - Chromed
Bravo Company - BCMGunFighter Charging Handle - Large
    YHM Low Profile Gas Block
    YHM Rifle Length Gas Tube
    YHM Phantom Compensator
    YHM Bipod Adaptor
    Caldwell XLA 6-9" Bipod
    Midwest Industries - T-Series 15" Rail
White Oak Armament - 18" SPR Barrel
    Burris Cantilever Scope Mount
    Vortex CrossFire 4-12x40 Scope

Sorry for being off topic, but funny you should post this pic... I just watched a show on the Military Channel last night about the Royal Marines and how they used their semi-auto SLR's to defeat the Argentines who had the full-auto FALs. Even saw a similar pic where some Marines were piling up the FALs for destruction.

    Anyway, just though I'd share.

Yep, it's true, the Brits only had the semi auto L1A1 SLR, while the Argies had the full autos.

I always found it (L1A1) to be very accurate, and "jam-free" in the right hands.

Always made me chuckle watching some idiot get a blackeye from it :lol2:

    I wasn't a fan of it's replacement though, the SA-80 (L85A1).

If you are wondering on the difference on the models of R1s - here is the link for the info from Remingtons webpage:

    http://www.1911r1.com/

There are a few limited editions versions of R1's out there -not listed on Remingtons page. There is a "dealer exclusive" OD green, slide, and black frame that must not be too popular - theres plenty of them NIB for sale on Gunbroker.com. The price is not too far off from the standard "Talo" version.

All of the R1 are Gov sized - 5 inch barrels - for now.
