I lived in a fraternity house for a couple of years in college and had a ferret. One of the other guys had a big tomcat. They mostly stayed away from each other when I had the ferret out running around but one time the tom cat went after the ferret--one time! The ensuing altercation looked like the old Warner Bros cartoon of the Tasmanian Devil---whirling dervish of brown fur claws and teeth--cat did not want a repeat of that and stayed away from him thereafter. People used to hunt rats and underground critters with a ferrets--laced their lips shut so they wouldnt kill their pray-just chase it out where the hunters would dispatch it. They are a hoot.

Ha! Loved my ferret. Named him Frank after the original ferret face Frank Burns. My dad one inebriated evening thought it would be funny to drop Frank under his shirt. Hilarity ensued. Not quite ferret legging from what I have read but dayum dad could not undo his shirt fast enough.

The one I had developed the bad habit of attaching himself to the Achilles Tendon of my Great Pyrenees. The big white dog would spin in circles and the ferret's legs would fly in the air behind him. They have no fear and no concept of danger.

They cannot survive in the wild for that very reason. Ferrets were the second animal domesticated after dogs.

Best book of ferret stories is Brian Plummer's Tales of a Rat-Hunting Man.

Really entertaining and sometimes gross book. Most people here would really enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure my 5lb Pomeranian wouldn't last 30 seconds with a ferret.
I once read that if a ferret weighed 75lbs there wouldn't be another creature alive. Or maybe it was weasels or martens. It was probably badgers.

So a ferret actually has a chance against a cat?

Our cat has no teeth but still has its claws.

Ferrets are introduced into rat and rabbit warrens to scare the inhabiants into the open. If the ferret is hungry, it may lay up inside and eat its way through whomever it can catch. They are terrifying predators, tough and game.
