Any recommendations for an EDC in D.C.? I will be working in a federal building but just the few times I have walked around the area, I do not feel safe not having something. ANy experienced hands know what flies for carry there? I am going to assume my Benchmade Balisong won't do... lol. Thanks.

Metal detectors are for guests? lol

Still in the paperwork phase for work. Everywhere else I have worked (for the DoD, Dept of Army) never had an issue with me having a knife. I mostly carried a Gerber or Benchmade folder.

Well, for what it's worth, I saw a dude at a coffee shop near the W.H. with a Strider SMF clipped to his pocket. He was a tourist. I started up a conversation with him and he handed the knife to me to play with. Nobody at the coffee shop even noticed, I don't think. Strider SMF with the nightmare grind if I remember correctly.

So, I don't know... just don't give a reason for "them" to stop you.

If D.C. knife laws aren't direct enough... I'd say keep the blade length below the width of four-fingers together? Thinking Spyderco Delica or even the UK-Pen knife. Something that you'd be ok with being taken away, I guess.

Or, maybe just grab a Mini-Maglite.

So maybe just carry my Surefire E2D? Not really as effective as a blade, but the beveled edges are good for thwacking...

Thanks for the advice. I hate feeling defenseless. I get edgy in crowds; I was on the Mall the other day and some dude was running up on me while I was on my phone and I nearly had a heart attack. Poor guy swung wide when I whirled around with my fists up. I felt like a dumbass.

Do you not have that on you everyday anyway?

I have a 6P defender that I carry almost everyday. If I don't have that then I have a G2x and its because I'm going into a courthouse or getting on a plane. The g2 is less menacing looking, and I don't want the 6p confiscated.

    Also what about a kuboton?

Get that phone case I posted a thread about... you know, the one with a claw blade on it. :D

Or, don't talk on the phone when you're in a crowd? Or... ease off the Yeager vids? :)

    :)

@Vin: I just moved here, most of my gear is still in an unidentified box in my closet. Still unpacking, since my wife had a TDY within days of arrival... :(

@RaVis- no Yeager vids, not familiar with him actually. lol

I had to talk to my future employers, get directions... the crowd thing is just a result of deployments, I think. Big crowd=big target, and I have a hard time with realizing that it isn't the same here, even 3+ years later. I feel lame even stating that, but my gut doesn't really give a crap what my mind thinks.

So the general feeling is that EDC (for a federal worker) is generally a NoGo?

Oh, and I am an Android guy... my wife is the I-phone user. Might pick it up for her though, if it is a sturdy case. ;)

When i go to DC i carry my glock 19, spare mag, smith 642, sog trident, cold steel recon 1, ka-bar tdi and stream light poly tac led. The great thing about being sworn means your edc never changes no matter where you are.

While cool, not helpful. Thanks though!
