BrowningGuy and I are booking a combo Whitetail/hog hunt. I’m thinking of mounting a thermal on my Garand just to be silly.

Does anyone have a Garand friendly load for game?

Many years ago, when the CMP was ‘The DCM’, I got an M1 Garand ($165).

I contacted NRA Competition Division, requesting loading data for the Garand.

They replied with several loads, including 150 and 168 gr bullets.

One ‘frequently used’ load consisted of Win 748 and Sierra 168 gr MatchKing bullets.
    47.7 grains.

It shot VERY WELL from my Garand, and switching to 165 gr GameKing bullets, shot just as well, out to 200 yds.

I’m sure that the 165 GameKing would work for lead injection of hogs.

The brass used was LC 69 and CCI LR primers.

I've had as many as 11 Garands once upon a time, and any of the published target loads using 4895 and a 150 or 168 gr bullet is more than enough for any deer on this continent and then some. Just use a game bullet and not a match bullet. the jackets are too thin.

I have one of these hog hunts booked in NC late December. Going with some of my customers. Planning on using my 5.56 AR. They say shots are at 30-40 yards. Hornady has a round they claim is good for deer so a head shot to a hog should be just fine too.

I may end up doing the combo as well. Prolly take the 870 for killing deer. I thought about taking my M1A1 as well but not sure how to mount a light and scope to it. Duct Tape?

Norma makes a "Whitetail" 150gr cartridge that is Garand friendly. I have some.
@teratos if you mount a thermal or NV scope to an M1 in a manner that is reversible and non-damaging, I'd love to see it.
