Gerald Ung's friends have started a non-profit corporation to provide financial aid for his criminal defense, The Gerald Ung Legal Defense Fund, Inc. Please visit our site and donate if you can. Thank you.

For anyone else monitoring this, the "Gerald Ung is Innocent" FB page shows that the gun charges were dropped (legal with the VA permit) a few weeks ago, but the other charges are still going forward. Will be interesting to see how it resolves.

If Ung was a police officer would anyone view things differently? A few on this board would be calling for his head. Just sayin' :outta her

If he were an LEO he would have probably had other Non-lethal means at his disposal: Taser, OC Spray, baton, and most importantly a badge and the implied backup and resources that provides. The entire point of citizen CCW is for protection against threats for those who do not carry an LEO on their person at all times. Not defending Ung, simply saying that it's a gray area here and that the court decision will be interesting in a very pro-CCW state.

If Ung was a Philly cop, he would have had the commom sense to throw down a drop gun and sprinkle a little crack on him after he shot the douche, and wouldn't have been arrested in the first place :sarcasm:

To me, it doesn't matter if Ung was a cop, student, bouncer, or any other profession, when attacked by multiple assailants who escalate the attack once ordered to stop, and facing a firearm, they are a lethal threat, once the assailant makes a grab for the gun it is a textbook example of justified use of lethal force for an officer or CCW holder. And while some may jump down an officer's throat due to prejudice aggainst Law enforcement, or ignorance, the vast majority here would remain as objective and impartial as possible, even without having the experience to view the incident through an officer's eyes.

the poll isnt going well now.
    52% justified now

The guy who attacked Ung had a PR firm working his side. Friends of the family.

This could affect Jury selection if it goes to trial. Mommy and Daddy of the attacker were already working overtime to "get ahead" of the news, right after their kid got shot.

I cannot see from his legal defense fund page what the status of his case is (this all happened in January).

So because he didnt have non-lethal means, he's OK to use lethal means against an unarmed person/s?

The badge meant nothing here and usually doesn't except to the law abiding citizen. "Implied backup and resources" are minutes away and seems like hours when you are in the midst of something like this. Looks like he used OC and that didn't help either. http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2010/04/chad_martez_white_21_of_kalama.html

You're preaching to the choir here. :D

    Yes it will.
