Based on the thread title I was hoping the first son had gotten cracked out and wandered off into the woods to try and pet a big kitty

I thought the first shot might have been a warning shot, but he shot right over its back on the second. I would have fired a warning shot way before he started filming!

That cat had its ears back and was ready to pounce. If that cat got that close to me after a warning shot and ears back, I would have shot until it ran, was dead or I was out of bullets.

If I were him, there would be a dead cat and an erased recording and a shut mouth
I'm thinking the video was a c.y.a. moment to have evidence that shooting it was the last resort. Granted, out in the middle of nowhere, chances of getting caught after the fact are less than here. Heaven forbid he had to actually shoot it and someone finds cat carcass ,reports it to DNR and they find a piece of brass with a useable fingerprint.

I was stationed at Fort Hunter Maggot (Liggett) in the beautiful Santa Lucia Mountains, between Big Sur and King City back in 1979. I started hiking out Friday evenings - I’d been a boy scout - coming back in Sunday PM. Had several run-ins with wildlife.

Puma: I was coming UP a hill, it was eating something, it wasn’t until I was on level ground maybe fifty feet away that it really took notice of me. It went THATaway, I went BACK the way I came.

Another time, I was hiking on some relatively level ground somewhere when I heard this CHUFF-CHUFF sound I couldn’t tell where it was coming from… then CHUFF-CHUFF stomp, CHUFF-CHUFF-stomp. At this point I noticed a barbed wire fence maybe fifty yards away (there hadn’t been one on the side of the PASTURE I had entered) and a bull maybe just that far away at an angle so I started edging towards the fence, he started walking to intercept, at the last 20 yards or so I RAN, threw my backpack over the wire and scrambled over the fence and - thank God - the bull stopped the other side of the wire. CHUFF-CHUFF-stomp-stomp.

My favorite was coming back late one night I had this creepy crawly feeling I was being followed. Cat? Mass murderer?

Hackles rising (do they ever set?), I stopped, turned slowly and flicked on my flashlight and there were six coyotes frozen in the position where the light caught ‘em scattered from 10 to maybe 30 feet behind. “Okay, guys, thanks for the escort,” I told ‘em, flicked off the light and walked the last mile or so to the back gate. I flicked on the light again and they were all still out there, a little farther away this time, and were around on future trips too. Only protection I carried was my trusty boy scout bowie knife.

Could’ve been worse, coulda been pit bulls.

What’s that old line about the Lord protecting fools and children? I was only 22.

I’m headed to Cibola NF in the mountains outside of Socorro, NM in a couple weeks. This story reignited some thoughts about protection in the woods. Where I’m going, there are mountain cats as well as bears. I’ve always gone out armed with my G20. This time, I figured I’d back that up with bear spray. I understand it’s limitations but I would much rather give an animal like that a chance if possible. But self preservation will always take priority. Plus I will have my GSD with me just to spend time outdoors with him. So his life is up there with mine in the event we run into something like this.

I never had a face to face with a wild, 4 legged predator. But... I did have a face to face with a deer once in the dark. I was bowhunting off near McKeldon wildlife area, finished and was coming back down a trail after dark. A deer (unbeknownst to me) was walking towards me on the trail, and at the last second we both met face to face in that darkness. Scared the shit out of me... and the deer as well.
