To get a back azimuth? How is more math easier?Easier mentally to add or subtract 200, then subtract or add 20.
So, 090. Add 200 = 290, subtract 20 = 270.
045 + 200 = 245- 20 = 225.
284 - 200 = 084 + 20 = 104
Oh. Common core.

Doubles as fire starter if you end up in a ditch and need to boil some snow coffee.I keep a full US map in each vehicle.
I have Gazeteers for PA, VA and WV in the truck because the GPS doesn't work in a lot of the places I end up.
I love reading maps. I will sit down and read them like a book.
My kids want nothing to do with maps or directions, just give me the address Dad.

Not for nothing but old charts make great wrapping paper...very nautical you know
In our flying days, my wife and I used to do the same with sectional and enroute charts. We had a friend who papered his guest room with sectional charts.

As always, you're right again.Easier to do in your head that adding or subtracting an odd number.
Quick, what is the reverse of 352?
Which is easier, dealing with subtracting 180, which means you have to take 1 from the 3, and make it 15 - 8. Or subtracting 3 - 2, and adding 5 + 2, for 172.
That's not what Mrs. GnR says!
Thanks, you're too kind.
My cut and paste (old-school definition) skills were learned in kindergarten. Learned to make map books in the Army. Turns out, you can go pretty far with just kindergarten and Army training - who knew?

Is your SO an artist and school teacher by chance?

It depends on how much it was ingrained in you from the various training.
For some +/- 180 is automatic.
I get lost even with GPS when I'm on roads.
Put me in the woods and I don't even need a compass.
Go figure.

I'm standing in the middle of the woods with all the time in the world going back to where I came from. I can subtract or add while drinking some warm canteen water and eating a Cliff bar.No, taught by the USAF.
Try it. It is easier to do in your head.
I’m the same way. I can navigate cities (on foot) very well. Roads? I’m hosed.
