    Deer targets taste ok.
Yeah man. Specially in a nice stew or with taters n onions.

Your shooting acumen reminded me of an outing at the range where my host hung eggs from strings. I got lucky and shot six of them with nine shots at 300 yards. Surprised myself. The breeze was light but made it harder that I’d guessed it would.

Turns out I dint get to enjoy those scrambled eggs…

It's a good, eye opening read. I read Selco's post many years ago. There was also a guy who survived the economic collapse in Argentina years ago that is a good read. I saved the link somewhere. If I find it, I'll post it. But if these are real accounts, they offer good, practical info. Selco said of course guns, but he also liked little things, like lighters to trade and refill. I did print out all his posts and put them somewhere just in case.
Selco has a few books available on Amazon. Search "Selco Begovic" so you do not get a bunch of Selco thermostats in the results.

Even knowing how to tend house plants puts you ahead of the vast majority for potentially growing your own food. We grew up doing the same things. We also cut our own trails in the woods and learned how and where to cross streams and marshes. Growing up on the marshes and in the woods has its advantages. If SHTF in my lifetime, I'll be happy in the fact that Bloomberg and his ilk will be amoung the first to starve.
How do you feel having the NRA certs for handgun carry help you gain business?

I think that the large incease in the numer of hunters, combined with taking deer out of season (i.e. killing pregnant does) will quickly devastate today's plentiful herds.

Most of the deer are in rural areas and most of the "hunters" are located in urban areas. People in rural areas will not be happy when "city folk" come out to harvest "their" deer and a lot of hunters will not return to their urban homes.

All these youtube channel "preppers" talking about bugging out and heading to the country,, What do they think their "greeting" will look like ???
Even people that bought rural property for recreation/escape, If you don't/haven't lived there a long time and are part of that community,, you are not going to be welcomed when you show up during SHTF.

You need to view jerky as a survival food and not what Jack Links and other have sold us on. Cut it across the grain and dry it of all moisture. You will need to chew it like gum to rehydrate it. The smoke helps to also disguises it from pests like flies, as does pepper and spices. This will probably still only be a couple weeks. They will grow mold still eventually, but you should be looking for more meat. If you read up on the fire triangle, you need fuel, oxygen and heat. Water removes the heat putting it out. Food preservation is similar with Food, oxygen and moisture. But fresh dried jerky will absorb moisture from the air slowly starting the process and allowing mold to grow. That won't hurt you, but rot and bacteria will.

If you want to store meat longer and better. A pressure canner and pint and quart jars will keep meat good for years. Store it in the basement in a dark area. Jerky is short term, as in weeks to a month

I've asked that question in the "bug out bag" threads. A few have said they are going to the mountains. I've told them the same thing and that people here are not going to view them very well, but as locusts, and treat them as such. They better be heading to their mountain cabin or a relatives place. Taking game on other people area will speed you to the end of the ride.

For long term storage of Jerky you need to turn it into Pemmican then it will keep for years. Short explaniation is Pemmican is dried meat chopped or ground very fine, think powder, mixed with equal parts of Tallow (and sometimes other things).

    Link to Wikipedia:

Search Pemmican for many more articles.

For those who have bought rural property some things you can do to fit in:

Subscribe to the local paper so you know what is important to the community and what is going on. Usually can be done by mail.

Shop in the local stores and talk to the local people.

Get involved with local activities. Join a club, support the VFD, go to church, attend local auctions, attend sporting events, etc.

    Make friends and help neighbors.

Give to local fund raising events.

I know the first two in my area I will band with, then three other neighbors we would approach to be with us. Then with a core other people join.
If I were you, I wouldn't wait until SHTF to start banding together. You need to talk to these people and organize them right now. If you think about it, there's really no downside to it.

I think if I need to ground deer and mix it with deer tallow, i'm going to get skinny until I get used to it.. Deer fat might keep you alive, but it not very plateable. I'll say this, I have rendered deer fat that has been in a plastic sealed bag on top the basement fridge for three years and is just fine.

I cooked from flank strips off a buck when rendering out the fat. Saw a piece looked like a nice fat meat/bacon strip. So I started eating it and the fat just coated my entire mouth.

I tried saving beef tallow and had it grow mold in the fridge.

We've talked and our properties all border each other.

If SHTF , I would have to take care of my mom, wife and her two elderly parents. We would be better off if someone put a bullet into all our heads.

That's what I was getting at earlier. If we don't have beef, poultry, or pork around and everyone is eating deer without any management how long do you think they will last? 1-2 years?

Heck, I imagine the small mammal population will plummet as well. (Rabbit, squirrel, muskrat, etc.)
    Waterfowl as well.
